Prior to Glasgow’s Famous Theatre Royal opening in Hope Street, the name of Theatre Royal had been used at various establishments throughout the City, one being on Dunlop Street, which was then a quiet cul-de-sac. The Theatre enjoyed years of success before it was demolished to make way for train lines. In 1849 a false fire alarm spread panic through its patrons, between 65 and 70 people were trampled to death.
